With the finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars season three airing tonight, fans are divided over who deserves to snatch the crown. The final four features Shangela Laquifa Wadley, Trixie Mattel, Bebe Zahara Benet and Kennedy Davenport (but, let’s face it, Bebe and Kennedy won’t/shouldn’t win tonight).
The easiest place to start when it comes to why Shangela is the deserving winner of this season is her statistics. This season alone she has won three lip syncs which, against Trixie’s zero wins in her entire Drag Race career, speaks for itself as a reason for her deserving the crown. Shangela has been consistent throughout the season and has delivered lip syncs and looks that will go down in Drag Race history (although we don’t need to talk about her golden record look from episode five)…
Something else to remember is that we have seen Shangela develop in front of our eyes. She has been on more seasons of Drag Race than any other queen after placing 12th on season two, 6th on season three and now being in the final four of All Stars 3. Seeing Shangela grow from the girl who didn’t know how to sew in season two to the fierce competitor she is now isn’t something we can say for any of the other girls. I watched season seven and I personally don’t see much difference in Trixie now compared to then. The lip syncs are still lacklustre, the makeup is the same and her attitude doesn’t seem to have improved much.
One thing I have to point out here is that I do not think the girl’s off-screen careers should be a reason for them to win tonight. Drag Race is a competition, so the girl’s performance in the competition should be the only thing that matters. Shangela, out of all of the remaining girls, has delivered the most this season. Do I even need to talk about her lip sync in the fat suit from episode seven?
The point I am making here is that there is literally no point in having a competition if the person that wins in the end is the one that appears to be more popular off screen prior to the season filming. It makes each challenge a waste of time and each elimination pointless. Most people’s reasoning for Trixie deserving to win is that she is successful outside of the show – but if that’s the case then why does she deserve to win this show, which is a competition based on performance in the challenges/lip syncs? There’s one simple answer here – she doesn’t.
I also have to wonder why so many former Drag Race queens are showing their support for Shangela on social media. It made me think of what Morgan said in the latest episode about Trixie being difficult to work with and I think the queen’s support of Shangela says a lot about who is easier to work with in the drag community… Just a thought.
So, with all of that said, I’ll leave it there as I don’t have anymore time to write tonight. I hope Shangela wins as she truly is deserving of the crown and has really stepped her game up this season. Could the Game of Thrones references have been more toned down? Sure, because I have no idea what she’s referring to when she talks about it. That said, Shangela is who I want to see win tonight. Who do you want to snatch the crown?
